REVIEW: ‘Pretty Deadly’ #5

(Image Comics, 2014)

Written by Kelley Sue DeConnick
Artwork by Emma Rios
Color Artwork by Jordie Bellaire
Lettering by Clayton Clowes

Kelly Sue Deconnick has proven herself to be one of the most versatile writers working today; her super hero work at Marvel is among the most innovative of their current offerings. However it’s her supernatural horror/ western Pretty Deadly that is breaking new ground among the independent mavericks.

REVIEW: ‘Magneto’ #1

(Marvel Comics, 2014)

Written by Cullen Bunn
Artwork by Gabriel Hernandez Walta
Color Artwork by Jordie Bellaire

Usually the announcement of another X-Men related solo series generates little to no excitement in my sphere of existence.  I much prefer my X-Men in team form.  When I heard that Magneto was going to be the next X-Men team member to get the solo treatment, however, I was more than interested. REVIEW: ‘Moon Knight” #1

(Marvel Comics, 2014)

Written by Warren Ellis
Artwork by Declan Shalvey
Color Artwork by Jordie Bellaire
Lettering by Chris Eliopoulos

To me, Moon Knight has always been Marvel’s Batman, or at least the closest approximation to the Dark Knight they had to offer. In the hands of the right creative team, like for instance Bendis and Maleev, Moon Knight is definitely worthy of the comparison Continue reading

REVIEW: ‘Half Past Danger’

(IDW Publishing, 2014)

Created, Written & Drawn by Stephen Mooney
Color Artwork (Issue #1) by Stephen Mooney
Color Artwork (Issues #2-6) by Jordie Bellaire

Half Past Danger is a book you should pick up. Really. You should stop now and go buy it. I could end the review right there, but then it wouldn’t be much of a review and my editor would stop sending me stuff and I would be out all of these wonderful comics and things…and the chance to see more work from Stephen Mooney. REVIEW: ‘Three’ #4

(Image Comics, 2014)

Review by Jeremiah Kielman

Written by Kieron Gillen
Artwork by Ryan Kelly
Color Artwork by Jordie Bellaire
Lettering by Clayton Cowles

Issue four of Three finds our heroes still on the run from the forces of Sparta.   Three hundred Spartans and trackers on the trail of three Helots.   Seems fair, right?   Fairness aside, they are coming.   But they are not the only ones. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Three” #3

(Image Comics, 2013)

Review by Jeremiah Kielman

Story by Kieron Gillen
Artwork by Ryan Kelly
Color Artwork by Jordie Bellaire
Letters by VC’s Clayton Cowles

Two issues ago our tale began when a smart mouthed Helot tells a true story.  Too bad for him that that truth was one no true Spartan could allow any man to utter.  And as a Helot, drunk or no, Terpander knew it was as good as walking into the path of a charging bull. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Deadpool” #18

(Marvel Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

WRITTEN BY: Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan
ARTWORK BY: Declan Shalvey
COLOR ARTWORK BY: Jordie Bellaire

Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn have written the “Pagliacci” of comic books, in the pages of their “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” story arc beats and breaks the heart of Marvel’s merry mercenary. However Duggan and Posehn have shown us that Deadpool is much more than Continue reading

REVIEW: “Deadpool” #17

(Marvel Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

WRITTEN BY: Brian Posehn & Gerry Duggan
ARTWORK BY: Declan Shalvey
COLOR ARTWORK BY: Jordie Bellaire

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly just keeps getting better, and part three is a perfect amalgamation of all the things that make us love Deadpool. The humor is stepped up a bit in this issue compared to the previous two parts but the tonal shift to darker more complex emotional subject matter is still very evident. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Quantum and Woody” #3

(Valiant Entertainment, 2013)

Review by Cory Thrall

WRITTEN BY: James Asmus
ARTWORK BY: Tom Fowler
COLOR ARTWORK BY: Jordie Bellaire

I’ve seen this title being referred to as a “buddy cop” type pf story, only with costumes and super powers, and this is fairly accurate.  You have all of the right fixtures – the strong, more experienced hero matched with the loose cannon crazy guy – all tipped in a thick coating of humor, science fiction, and mystery. REVIEW: “The Manhattan Projects” #13

(Image Comics, 2013)

Review by Shawn Warner

WRITTEN BY:  Jonathan Hickman
ARTWORK BY:  Nick Pitarra & Jordie Bellaire

This is a book about genius, dark, sinister and inspired genius. It is written and conceived by a genius but, fortunately for me, you do not have to be a genius to appreciate and enjoy Jonathan Hickman’s opus of science gone horribly awry. Hickman has been creating some of his best work for Image. Continue reading

STORY BY:  Joe Harris w/ Chris Carter
WRITTEN BY:  Joe Harris
ARTWORK BY:  Michael Walsh
COLOR ARTWORK BY:  Jordie Bellaire
LETTERING BY:  Shawn Lee

Comics based on films, television, and video games have really filled the market in the past decade or so, from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, many “Army of Darkness” spin-offs, and even a “Mass Effect” list of titles.  There are more, but I think you get the point. Continue reading

REVIEW: “Numbercruncher” #1

(Titan Comics, 2013)

Review by Cory Thrall

WRITTEN BY:  Si Spurrier
ARTWORK BY:  PJ Holden
COLOR ARTWORK BY:  Jordie Bellaire
LETTERING BY:  Simon Bowland

Being released today, July 17th, Titan Comics new title “Numbercruncher” is not at all what you might think from the cover, but isn’t that supposed to always be the case?  What looks to be a mobster of some kind is actually a false face for the genius and inventive story that lies behind it.  This is no ‘normal’ comic, and that’s a very good thing.  Originally published in “Judge Dredd: Megazine” #306-308, this is a comic that shifts from black and white to fully colored artwork, making for a curious and satisfying read. Continue reading
